Darwin Northern Territory.

Darwin city in north-central Australia, the capital and chief port of the Northern Territory. The city has a fine harbour and is the terminus of a railway line running north to south; it also has an international airport. Until 1911 the city was called Palmerston, but was renamed in honour of Charles Darwin, who landed here in 1839 when HMS Beagle put into harbour. Fannie Bay Gaol Museum. is located on East Point Road and has a number of interesting displays including the gallows which were erected in the infirmary for the Territory's last execution in 1952. The laundry was destroyed by Cyclone Tracy and it is appropriate that the gaol now houses a Cyclone Tracy display which includes an excellent photographic display and a continuous 30 minute video of the devastation. The city also serves as a gateway to Kakadu National Park, Which lies 247 km to the east.
